How to get rated for anxiety disorder (generalized)

  1. Current diagnosis (GAD, panic disorder, or both).
  2. Link to service — onset in service, or secondary to another service-connected condition.
  3. C&P exam describing frequency and severity of panic attacks.

Common secondary conditions

  • +GERD
  • +Hypertension
  • +Sleep apnea

File these separately. VA rates each service-connected condition independently and combines them via § 4.25.

Frequently asked

What counts as a panic attack for rating purposes?

VA considers a panic attack to be an abrupt surge of intense fear with physical symptoms (heart pounding, sweating, dizziness, fear of losing control). Frequency — less than weekly vs more than weekly — is what distinguishes 30% from 50%.
