VA Disability Ratings by Condition

Plain-English rating guides for the most-claimed VA conditions. Each page covers the 38 CFR rating tiers, 2026 monthly compensation amounts, how to get rated, common secondary conditions, and nexus tips.

Lumbar Spine Strain / Lower Back Pain

DC 5237

Rated 10–100% by forward flexion range of motion. Radiculopathy adds a separate neurological rating.

Knee Condition (Limited Motion / Instability)

DC 5260 / 5261 / 5257

Rated separately for limited flexion (5260), limited extension (5261), and instability (5257). Bilateral factor applies if both knees.

Plantar Fasciitis

DC 5269

Rated 10/20/30% by severity and response to treatment. Newer dedicated DC as of 2021 — do not accept a 5299-5020 analogous rating.

Fibromyalgia

DC 5025

Fixed ratings: 10/20/40%. Gulf War Illness presumptive for SW Asia vets.

Cervical Spine Strain / Neck Pain

DC 5237

Rated 10–100% by forward flexion. Radiculopathy into the arms is rated separately.

Shoulder Condition (Limited Motion / Impingement)

DC 5201

Rated 20–40% on the dominant side by degree of limited motion. Rotator cuff and impingement claims fit here.

Flat Feet (Pes Planus)

DC 5276

Rated 0/10/20/30/50% by severity and bilateral involvement.

Hip Condition / Thigh Limitation

DC 5252

Limited thigh flexion rated 10/20/30/40%. Separate code for limited extension (5251). Bilateral factor applies.

Degenerative Arthritis (DJD)

DC 5003

10% per major joint with painful motion; 20% with multiple joint involvement and exacerbations.

Ankle Condition (Limited Motion)

DC 5271

10% for moderate, 20% for marked limitation of ankle motion. 20% is the max under 5271.

Wrist Condition (Limited Motion)

DC 5215

Caps at 10% under DC 5215. Higher ratings require ankylosis or carpal tunnel.

Elbow Condition (Limited Motion)

DC 5206

Rated by limitation of forearm flexion. Up to 50% (dominant) for severe restriction.

Rotator Cuff Tear / Tendinopathy

DC 5201

Rated by limitation of shoulder motion (DC 5201). 20% / 30% / 40% based on how high you can lift the arm.

Hallux Valgus (Bunion)

DC 5280

10% maximum under DC 5280 — for severe (equivalent to amputation of great toe) or operated cases.

Hammertoe

DC 5282

0% for single toe; 10% for hammertoe of all toes of one foot, without claw foot.

Lumbar IVDS (Intervertebral Disc Syndrome)

DC 5243

Rated by incapacitating-episode formula OR general spine formula — whichever is higher.

Cervical IVDS (Cervical Disc Disease)

DC 5243

Same incapacitating-episode formula as lumbar IVDS, applied to the cervical spine.

Neurological · 13 conditions

Radiculopathy / Sciatica

DC 8520

Rated 10/20/40/60/80% by nerve involvement severity. Separate rating from the underlying back/neck condition.

Migraine Headaches

DC 8100

Rated 0/10/30/50% by frequency of prostrating attacks. 50% cap unless extraschedular.

Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) Residuals

DC 8045

Rated by 10 facets; the highest single facet determines the rating (0/10/40/70/100%). Frequently missed.

Parkinson's Disease

DC 8004

Minimum 30% schedular. Agent Orange presumptive AND Camp Lejeune presumptive.

Peripheral Neuropathy

DC 8520 (lower) / 8515 (upper)

Rated by nerve + severity (mild/moderate/severe/complete paralysis). Agent Orange early-onset presumptive.

Tension / Cervicogenic Headaches

DC 8100 (analogous)

Rated analogously under DC 8100. Max 50% by frequency of prostrating attacks — same framework as migraines.

Carpal Tunnel Syndrome

DC 8515

Rated as median nerve paralysis: 10% mild → 70% complete (dominant). EMG study is the gold-standard evidence.

Stroke (CVA Residuals)

DC 8008

100% for first 6 months post-CVA, then rerated by residuals (motor, sensory, speech, cognitive).

Sciatica (Sciatic Nerve Paralysis)

DC 8520

Rated 10% mild → 80% complete paralysis. Always file with underlying back condition.

Epilepsy / Seizure Disorder

DC 8911

Rated 10–100% by frequency and type of seizures. Must be confirmed by physician and diagnosis.

Multiple Sclerosis (MS)

DC 8018

Minimum 30% rating; total rating combines residuals (motor, vision, fatigue, cognition).

Bell's Palsy (7th Cranial Nerve)

DC 8207

Rated 10% moderate / 20% severe / 30% complete paralysis of the 7th cranial nerve.

Brain Cancer (Glioblastoma / CNS Tumors)

DC 8002

Malignant brain tumors (DC 8002) rate 100% during active disease. PACT Act presumptive for burn-pit exposure.
