VA Disability Rating for Cervical IVDS (Cervical Disc Disease)

Same incapacitating-episode formula as lumbar IVDS, applied to the cervical spine.

Cervical IVDS uses the same DC 5243 framework as lumbar IVDS — rated under the higher of (a) general spine formula or (b) incapacitating-episode formula. Cervical disc disease frequently causes upper-extremity radiculopathy (numbness, weakness in arms/hands), which is rated separately and stacks.

How to get rated for cervical ivds (cervical disc disease)

  1. Cervical MRI confirming disc pathology.
  2. Physician-prescribed bedrest documentation if pursuing incapacitating-episode formula.
  3. Cervical range-of-motion measurements (forward flexion normal 0–45°).
  4. File any upper-extremity radiculopathy SEPARATELY — DC 8510 (upper radicular), 8511 (middle), 8512 (lower).

Common secondary conditions

  • +Cervical radiculopathy (upper extremity)
  • +Tension headaches
  • +Shoulder strain

File these separately. VA rates each service-connected condition independently and combines them via § 4.25.

Nexus tips

  • Combat helmet weight, parachuting, MVA, and aviation/heavy-equipment service all support cervical IVDS nexus.
  • Cervical strain (DC 5237) often co-exists — file both, VA picks higher.
